The "Coronation Safari" first took place in 1953 when fifty-six local competitors set out on an adventure, driving through the savannah for days and nights with their road cars. In the years that followed, more and more European drivers tried to win this unique challenge in the East African bush. All of them failed until finally Hannu Mikkola won the event in a works-entered Ford Escort in 1972. Today the "Safari" is one of the most famous events and known throughout the World as the toughest rally. In 2002 the fiftieth event was held and it is possible that it may be the last. On the occasion of that anniversary, Reinhard Klein, in association with former co-driver John Davenport, compiled this massive work containing more than 300 pages.
